Zen Jiu Jitsu White to Blue Mr Oliver Staark 9781491023747 Books Reviews

  • I liked the simplicity and found guidance here. One of the problems I run into in BJJ is that Day 1 is not a fundamentals class, its just a class like any other. You learn fundamentals along the way, mainly through trial and error. Yes, the coach or instructor will point out not to cross your feet in an armbar or how to trap the foot, trap the arm and bridge, but you learn the hard way that getting cross faced is bad. This fuels the terminator, and I really like how this book touches on how to deal with that terminator as well as fundamental mentalities. Jocko Willink says that guidelines take you further than directions. This book is how to THINK Jiu Jitsu. Everyone should read this and then follow up with Jiu Jitsu University, and I will be coming back to both frequently for sure. Great read!
  • This book is a great read very insightful and easy. Its Jiu jitsu minus all the crazy expert jargon,I found this book even better after I read it the second time half way through my white belt and funny with a lot of aha moments after I actually got my blue belt ( thanks mostly to this book )this book was I great reference point to keep dipping to when the whole thing seemed a little to much during the tiredness ,the injuries and lack of motivation and for that I thank you Mr Stark,my journey is just now beginning 😊👏👊
  • Bought and read this before my first lesson in BJJ, I'm a white belt with only 10 months now, but the philosophy and advice in this book really helps to augment what I'm learning on the mat. I also bought the journal and use it for every session, seminar, and tournament. I have much left to learn, but I have to give Mr. Stark my thanks for his books and his many helpful approaches to learning.
  • I bought this book about a week before I started my jujitsu journey.
It has some great recommendations for beginners,
I would recommend it for anyone who is in the beginning stages of their jits journey.
  • the book is very short and has a ton of typos (front and back cover included) the content is pretty decent but the majority of the content is stuff i've already read for free on numorus forums.
  • I enjoyed this book. It gave me a lot to think about regarding how I approach BJJ. Looking forward to applying the drilling at home concepts as well as becoming proficient at the techniques recommended at the end of the book. Good explanation of concepts for white belts to get their head around.
  • This book is full of typos and is very confusing to read. All of the chapters are extremely short and the author constantly repeats himself. I don't think anyone proof-read this book or questioned it's format and content before it went to print. Not a good book.
  • As an overwhelmed beginner, the text helped me to keep my focus on the here and now. After reading this, I’m more able to focus on fundamentals and just let the learning process dictate my progression.
