Harry Nast has it all. An apartment in the West Village, a column in a downtown rag, great friends and a slew of lovers. But when one of those lovers calls in the early morning hours and quickly turns up dead, Harry's life is turned upside down. His apartment is ransacked and his job is suddenly on the line. Can Harry keep it all together or will his own demons get him first? More than a mystery, Don't Quote Me is a story about friendship, gay men and the struggles they face. You'll laugh and you'll cry. Harry Nast is a character you will not soon forget.

"This a pretty stellar debut novel centering around gossip columnist Harry Nast, his friends, and his lovers. The dialogue is engaging and emotions are conveyed more with actions than any overwrought writing. And the emotions of the characters do shine through. It is entertaining, sorrowful, and little suspenceful in parts It had some things that bothered me - a lot of casual drug (meth) use through the first half of the book and apparently none of these men ever used a condom, even the HIV positive ones, but the book was so good I decided to finish it and was glad I did. There was a formatting problem that I've never seen before. It looked like every time an "enter" was made on a keyboard, a consecutive number would appear so that each paragraph was consecutively numbered and even the spaces between a chapter title and the next paragraph were numbered. Odd. The book contained a line that I don't think I will ever forget. The MC's best friend told him a story about accidently walking in on a rival gossip columnist having sex (bottoming). After the rival columnist scurries away, the best friend asks the other guy how it was; and he replies like throwing a tic tac into space. I'll leave you with that and recommend this book."

  • This is an interesting take on Gay life in NYC. It shows great friends, friends with benefits and drug use and abuse. Porn stars, tabloid writer and a PR friend. Oh and HIV positive men and their struggles. This is well written and shows friends help each other and solve the.murder of one of their friends. Betrayal and love. I really loved this book and the style of writing.
  • The film Gosford Park used a murder mystery to explore a disappearing way of life for the British in the 1930's, this novel uses a murder mystery to expose the way of life for gay men in post AIDS epidemic New York.

The writing is tight, reading languid, it draws you in. By the time you realise what is happening the plot seems secondary. But my oh my, does the plot thicken and then twists to pull out your gut... twice.

If you are looking for romanticised man on man skip this one. If you want to read something you'll remember"Qoute me."
  • Starting at location 1007 the formatting is wonky, showing line/sentence numbers. Too distracting and annoying to read any more of it. Downloaded it to a different tablet with the same results.
  • This was a really great read. There’s mystery, romance and great insight into all the characters. I love the subculture within a subculture ambiance.
Disclaimer I don’t receive anything free from or Goodreads, I don’t know the author or publisher, oh, and I don’t review a book based on formatting. BTW, mine was fine.
  • What fun. I lived in NYC for years and this book was like a trip home. One of my new favorites.
  • Great story. Kept me on edge with all the twists that popped up. The author painted a perfect picture that brought me back to my days living the life in New York City. Would highly recommend this author and book to others.
  • I thought it was a fabulous read, and entertaining. Can’t wait for the sequel!
